Mica Tape Electrical Insulation

Mica tape is an interesting product that has multiple uses both for industrial and residential purpose. Chemically, micas can be given the general formula –

X2Y4-6 Z8O20(OH, F)4

In which:

  • X is K, Na, or Ca or less commonly Ba, Rb, or Cs;
  • Y is Al, Mg, or Fe or less commonly Mn, Cr, Ti, Li, etc;
  • Z is chiefly Si or Al, but also may include Fe3+ or Ti.

Structurally, micas can be classed as dioctahedral (Y = 4) and trioctahedral (Y = 6). If the X ion is K or Na, the mica is common mica, whereas if the X ion is Ca, the mica is classed as brittle mica.

  • Mica tape is used mainly in the electronic and electrical industries.
  • High-quality block mica is processed so that it is possible to create gauge glasses of high-pressure steam boilers. This can be done because of the high flexibility, transparency, and resistance to heat and chemical attack nature of Mica tapes.
  • Mica sheets are used to provide structure for heating wire (such as in Kanthal or Nichrome) in heating elements and can withstand up to 900 °C (1,650 °F).

Advantages of mica tape: –

  • Good dielectric strength
  • Inorganic content
  • Does not support corona
  • Thermal conductivity
  • Low dissipation factor
  • Easily impregnated with resin
